Malaysian Prime Minister Ordered to Testify at Sodomy Trial

Advocate, October 21, 1999

Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad was ordered Thursday by a court to testify next week at the sodomy trial of his former deputy Anwar Ibrahim. Japan Economic Newswire reports that Mahathir, who was subpoenaed by Anwar’s attorneys, will testify on October 28 about claims that the sodomy charges against Anwar are part of a political conspiracy to embarrass him. Anwar is on trial, along with his brother, for having sex with his wife’s chauffeur. He has denied the charges against him. Attorney General Mohtar Abdullah said that the prime minister may ask to have the subpoena set aside so that he will not have to testify.
