Malaysian Laws Will Allow Caning For Gay Sex

Religious authorities in a number of Malaysian states have said that they will start
caning Muslims found guilty of a number of offenses, including premarital and gay sex, the
Deutsche Press Agency reports. Currently Muslims found guilty of these offenses are
usually fined. Leaders in the southern state of Johore first introduced the harsher
penalties. Since then, religious leaders in the states of Selangor and Kedah and in the
territory of Kuala Lumpur have said they are ready to follow suit. Malaysia has separate
laws and courts for Islamic matters that deal mainly with family, divorce, and sex. The
secular court system already imposes caning and jail time for those found guilty of sodomy
and pimping.
