Contact Lebanese Officials to Condemn the Arrest of Two Lesbians

Dear Sirs,
We are the Institute pro Lebanese Equality for Gays and Lesbians; a
non-profit private organization set up by the GayLebanon Group in 1998 to
serve and represent the Lebanese Queer (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender
and Transvestite) community locally and abroad. Our aim is to promote the
legal, social and cultural equality of our community whilst providing support
and social networks, objective newscasts and assessments as well as other
services related to our cause.
A Daily Star newscast dated August 23, 2002 and titled "Two
lesbians arrested for unnatural sex" concerning two lesbians
being arrested in Lebanon because of their homosexuality has come to our
notice.
Our regional unit in Lebanon confirmed the substance of the Daily Star
newscast.
Our past efforts of contacting Lebanese officials to express our concern
and to proclaim our condemnation have constantly failed to make a difference.
We are aware of the conservative social settings of Lebanon and the
negative societal attitude towards the homosexual community; however this does
not entitle the deprivation of liberty of homosexuals by the Lebanese
government nor warrants the torture and abuse sanctioned by the Lebanese
police. Through this system of human rights abuses, Lebanon is breaching many
international covenants and human rights conventions of which it is a member,
not to mention basic human integrity.
Therefore we propose that you join us in condemning this latest of many
events in which homosexuals were victims of ill-treatment. We also recommend
that the many different Women organizations in Lebanon extend their supports
and services to the two lesbians because of their twofold inferior status in
the Lebanese legal system as they are 1-women and 2-homosexuals, extremely
prone to being abused, raped, tortured and denied judicial fairness and
justice.
Included are the addresses of different Lebanese Governmental and
Diplomatic departments where letters and emails of protestation can be sent.
