Klein Rebukes Bishop’s Comments on Gays

Calgary Herald, January 20, 2005

Edmonton—Alberta Premier Klein says he doesn’t agree with a Calgary Catholic bishop who has written a letter to his congregation criticizing homosexuality.

Klein says he doesn’t believe Bishop Fred Henry’s comments likening homosexuality to prostitution, pornography and adultery.

The premier says he hopes the bishop’s remarks won’t result in a new wave of hatred towards gays.

Klein says some clergy may have strong feelings about homosexuals, but the law of the land is developed by government.

He says it was a wave of hatred resulting from a gay rights ruling in the Supreme Court of Canada that caused him to change Alberta’s human rights laws to protect homosexuals from discrimination.

But he says his caucus drew the line at gay marriage.
